John Gottfried Bruckner was born in 1809 in Prussia/Germany and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1849. Click here to view his naturalization application. He may have immigrated with a half brother but no record of him, or a brother, living in PA has been found. His half brother John Traugoff immigrated in 1851 and lived near John Gottfried. Click here to find out where he was born in Germany. After he moved to Wisconsin he purchased (homesteaded) 120 acres in Adams County In 1857 where he built a log house and started farming. Click here to view a copy of the land purchase record. The house was built just south-west of Fenner Lake in New Chester Township, Adams County. He married Rachel who died in childbirth, probably about 1858. In 1860 he married Johanna who died in childbirth in 1863. After his second wife died he was 54 and he decided that a girl from the Old Country would be stronger, so he wrote home to Germany for a bride that already had one or more children. He probably wanted to be sure he ended up with at least one child even if the new bride didn't have any children after they were married.
The family story is that his request went to a church pastor in Germany who requested a bride from a home for un-wed mothers. The women who were willing to go said a prayer and then drew straws. A girl named Anna Helen drew the short straw. There is another family story that he wrote to a nursing home in Holland for a wife. It should be noted that German history experts have said that there were no homes for un-wed mothers or nursing homes, as we know them, in the mid 1800's. Mr. Bruckner probably did write for a wife but otherwise the family story is probably not like it really happened. The correct last name for Anna is a mystery as several different spellings appear in family history records but it is probably "Micklausch" as that is the closest proper German name.
John wrote to her and said he had the largest house for miles around. That was true but it was a log house and there were very few houses yet in that area of Wisconsin. It had a basement, kitchen, living room, large bedroom downstairs, and the upstairs was another large bedroom. When Anna saw the house and the wilderness in Wisconsin she wished she could go back immediately but she stayed. The 1910 census record for Westfield, WI lists Anna Bruckner as having immigrated in 1864 and they certainly would have been married right away but a record of that marriage has not been found.
John G. Brueckner and his third wife Anna had two children, John Lewis in 1866 and Samuel in 1867. John G raised Anna's child Edward (Henry Edward) like he was his own. John, Anna, and the children farmed about 300 acres. John G died at 73 in 1882 and Anna died at 80 in 1907. Anna lived with her son J Lewis and his wife Augusta after John G died.
John Traugott Brueckner, a younger half-brother, apparently immigrated later as he purchased land just to the North-East of Finner lake in 1876. Click here to view a copy of the land purchase record.
