H. Edward (Ed) was born in Germany in 1857 to Anna Helen Micklausch (spelling of last name has not been verified). It is not known if his mother was ever married but Micklausch was probably her married name. In 1864 Ed and his mother immigrated to America and Anna married John Gottfried Bruckner in Adams County, Wisconsin. JG Bruckner's first two wives died in childbirth died. After the second wife died in 1863 he wrote back to Germany and asked for a German wife with one or more children. Mr. Bruckner was already 55 and probably wanted to be sure he had at least one child. Anna Micklausch was that wife. It is not known if JG Bruckner formally adopted Ed but Ed always used Bruckner as his last name after arriving in America. Mr. Bruckner is said to have raised him as his own son. Anna was already 37 when she got to Wisconsin but she had two children, Sam and John Lewis, after marrying JG Bruckner.

Ed's mother Anna had a cousin that lived in Nebraska. Some time prior to his step-fathers death in May of 1882 Ed moved to Nebraska. He married Pauline Ernst who was from Girbigsdorf, Germany - the same home town of Edward's step-father JG Bruckner. Anna may have also lived near Girbigsdorf. It is likely that the Bruckner and the Ernst families knew each other in German as Girbigsdorf was a small village.  Anna's cousin in Nebraska may could been one of Pauline's parents (Carl & Caroline Ernst). The Ernst family first went to Wisconsin in 1868 when they immigrated but after only two weeks they when on to Nebraska as it was too cold in WI. They bought a farm 11 miles NW of Nebraska City in Otoe County, about 50 miles west of Linclon, NE . They went there because a family acquaintance, Ernst Guenzel, lived there. Guenzel was from Schleusingen, Germany which is about 240 miles west of Girbigsdorf. There was also a Frenzel family from Girbigsdorf that lived in Otoe County.  The Ernst family moved to Lincoln, NE prior to the summer of 1880 as they are included in the 1880 Lincoln census

H. Edward Bruckner's wife Pauline Ernst is listed in the 1880 census as a servant in the house of John & Matilda McMechan in Otoe County, NE. Edward & Pauline were married in the McMechan house in 1882. It is possible that John Mcmechan, or his wife Matilda Ballentine, were those cousins and that Edward met his future wife Pauline because she worked in the McMechan home. Click here for the John & Matilda McMechan stories.

No diffinate cousin connection to any of these families has been found.

After JG Bruckner died in May of 1882 Anna tried for some time to manage the farm but it became too difficult for her. Probably about 1885, Anna and her son Sam moved to Lincoln, NE were Ed & Pauline lived. Ed and Sam went to work on the railroad. They probably got the railroad job as Carl J. Ernst was an executive with the railroad. Anna had not sold the farm in Wisconsin and some time prior to 1898 Anna and Sam returned to the farm in Wisconsin. It is not known if Anna's son John Lewis when to Nebraska with them.

Ed and Pauline lived in Lincoln but were married in Otoe County. It does not appear that Ed ever lived in Otoe County but may have gotten married there as it was where the Ernst family farm was located. Ed and Pauline had 13 children but at least 6 of the children died very young. Four of them died very close together of Diphtheria in 1890.

The following listing is included in the 1901 Lincoln, NE city directory.
     Bruckner, H. Edw, fireman A St. Pump Sta., Residence, 525 S. 30th

For some unknown reason the Ed Bruckner family moved to the Greeley, Colorado area in 1904 where he lived until he died in 1921. Eds daughter Grace, wrote in the family history that a note on the Birth Certificate of her brother John says the Father (Ed Bruckner) was a Station Engineer in Lincoln, Nebraska and in Colorado a farmer and "Jack of all trades". Edward's brother Sam also lived in the Greeley area for about a year in 1908, 1913, and 1919.

Ed's death record shows his occupation was a stationary fireman at Great Western Sugar Company. Ed's wife Pauline continued to live in CO for 39 years after his death until she died in 1960 at age 99. Pauline, Ed, and all/most of his children are buried in Nebraska.
