MISCELLANEOUS COTTRELL FAMILY INFORMATION

A poem written by Alson Cottrell of Irma, Wisconsin and dedicated to his brother Carl of Poysippi, Wisconsin on Carl's 60th birthday Feb. 21, 1927

We are getting old, my brother,

     Still life see's sweet to us;

We would live a little longer,

     So in God we put our trust.

Old time has left his footprints

     In our face and on our wig;

Tasks that in our youth seemed trifles

     Now seem exceeding big.

We will dream of the days of old, brother.

     And of friends we loved so well;

And the wonders of our childhood,

     To our children we will tell.

How we hunted the cotton-tail rabbit,

     without the aid of a gun.

Just chopped him out of a hollow log,

     and had such lots of fun.

We were game in a game at school, brother

     and each loved a lassie sweet;

And when all the school were looking,

     We would perform some wonderous feat.

We skated among the canebrakes;

     You and I and our pals.

We picked the crimson cranberries;

     We swam in the old canals.

We would climb to the highest tree tops;

     We were good in a game of ball.

And if we entered a foot race

     We would try to outstrip them all.

We will live for the days of old, brother.

     And the friends we still have here;

Each new arriving grandchild

     Fills our old hearts with cheer.

Our ships are sailing on, brother.

     They will anchor soon 'tis true.

Let's hope 'twill be within the veil,

     Where we will live our lives a new.

We are growing old my brother;

     Let's steer off the golden shore.

And seek to enter the city of God;

     And be pals forever more.
