Frederick G. Cottrell about 1920
Dr. Fredrick G. Cottrell is famous for developing an important pollution control method  - the process of using an electrical charge that allows certain particles and mists to be collected out of the smoke stack discharge of smelters, factories, and power plants. This become known as "Cottrellizing" and has been called the "Cottrell Precipitator."
He was a professor at the University of California -Berekley and a Director of the Bureau of Mines. For nearly a century Dr. Cottrell's  electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), have been a primary air pollution control technology throughout the world. Hamon Research-Cottrell company is a primary supplier of electrostatic precipitators.
Cottrell created the Research Corporation foundation, now called Research Corporation for Sceince Advancement (RCSA), to receive income from his patents so the income could be distributed to university researchers. RCSA has given grants  of over $150 million.
     F. G. Cottrell's only interest was scientific achivement and he did not want to profit financially from his many inventions. His biography by F. Cameron is titled "Cottrell: Samaritan of Science".
