There is information that can be found in the LDS database and and other Internet locations indicating that Nicholas Cottrell and/or his father came from Halesowen, Worecestershire, England. A professional Worecestershire County, England researcher was paid to see if that Nicholas Cottrell connection was correct. No evidence to support that connection was found so that connection is not included in the following family tree. Information also exists saying that Nicholas Cottrell was born in Worecestershire County, England in 1591. The researcher did find a 1591 birth record there for a Nicholas Cottrell but a 1657 death record was found for a Nicholas Cottrell which could have been for the one born in 1591 and, therefore, not the one that when to America. If Nicholas had been born in 1591 he would have been 89 when he died in 1680. Living to that age then was very unlikely. Also, he would have had all of his children when he was between the ages of 49 and 65 - again not very likely. While no supporting Worecestershire evidence was found it is possible that Nicholas, or his father, was born there as the records for that time frame are not complete.
There is also published information that Nicholas was born in 1622. Some say he was born in England and some say he was born in Rhode Island. A researcher at the Rhode Island Historical Society does not believe he was born in America as there is no record of a Cottrell there that could have been his father. The first record of Nicholas in the USA is of him being admitted as an inhabitant (Freeman) of Newport, Rhode Island on May 20, 1638. Only adults, 21 or older, were admitted as inhabitants. That means he had to have been born in 1617, or earlier. If he had been born in 1622 he would have been only 16 in 1638. It is likely that he arrived in America in 1638, or not long before that. A search of ship passenger records has not revealed his name but passenger records for that time frame are not complete.
